Sri Lankans mark 64th I-Day with spectacular dance show

Sri Lankans turned out in large numbers at the Doha Cinema on Friday to witness a spectacular performance by their favourite dance troupe Chandana Wickramasinghe and the Dancers’ Guild.

The programme was organised by the Sri Lankan embassy in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Co-ordinating Committee (SLCC) and the Sri Lankan Community Benevolent Fund (SLCBF) to celebrate the 64th Independence Day of  Sri Lanka which falls on February 4.  Sri Lankan Ambassador Jayantha Palipane was the chief guest.
 

The programme began with the lighting of the traditional lamp by Ambassador Palipane, RS Khan Azad, Minister & Deputy Chief of Mission, sponsors and office-bearers of SLCC and SLCBF. Palipane also addressed the community.
A souvenir to mark the occasion was unveiled.
 

The five-hour programme titled “Salamba” which enthralled the audience featured traditional Kandyan and low country dances, creative fusion, folk and modern  dance.
 

Chandana, with his  modern style , innovation, creative work and distinctive style of performance touched the hearts of the audience , said SLCC president Lenny Cramer.
 

Also children from the local dance academies of choreographers Lasanthi Munindradasa (Lasanthi Dancing Academy), Subani Ferdinando (Seraphs) and Dinuk Lawrance (Dinu Rangayathanaya) showcased their talents at the celebration.
 

The main sponsor was Sri Lankan Airlines, official sponsor Qatar Telecom (Q.Tel), sponsor Doha Bank with media sponsors Lankadeepa Middle East and Virakesari.
 

SLCC General Secretary Anura Hettigoda proposed a vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Rukman Warnakula.
